How to Catch Crappie: Fishing Tips & Techniques

Catching crappie can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it takes more than just dropping a line in the water. If you want to up your chances of bringing home a haul, check out these fishing tips and techniques.
When to Fish for Crappie
Crappie fishing is a year-round sport, but the peak time to catch them is generally from February to June. During this time, the fish are spawning and can be found near cover in shallow water. Basically, we want the water to warm up to the mid-50s as this is when the spawn begins. Keep in mind, this depends on where you’re fishing as well.
Also – crappies are most active in the early morning and late evening, so if you can fish during these times you’ll likely have more success.
If you plan on catching crappie in the winter, you’ll want to target deep water areas and focus on vertical jigging.

Where to Catch Crappie
The best place to catch crappie is generally around brush piles, docks, or any other type of structure in lakes or rivers. Look for deep water nearby as the fish will often suspend themselves near these areas.
Another good tip is to check out marinas and other places where there’s a lot of human activity as the crappie will often congregate in these areas.
How to Catch Crappie
